Telexistence Announces Appointment of Yutaka Matsuo, Professor at The University of Tokyo, as the AI Technology Advisor
2020/08/24
Telexistence Inc. (Headquarters: Minato-ku, Tokyo; CEO: Jin Tomioka; hereafter “TX”) today announced the appointment of Yutaka Matsuo, Professor at Graduate School of Engineering, The University of Tokyo, as the AI Technology Advisor.
Professor Matsuo is an expert in artificial intelligence (especially deep learning) and web engineering. Based on the University of Tokyo, he promotes various research activities with the mission of making a difference in society through R&D, human resource development, and social implementation. He established the Japan Deep Learning Association in 2017 and is working as a chairman to offer information, make recommendations to public institutions and promote international collaboration.
Using master-slave robotics and artificial intelligence, TX aims to spread robots outside the factory and closer to the human realm. In light of this purpose, TX believes it will be a great strength to welcome Professor Matsuo, who is the leading researcher in the most advanced AI research and has a high motivation for practical use of AI in the real world. On the other hand, Professor Matsuo is active in producing internationally successful startups from Japan, and his interest in TX’s efforts led to his appointment.
Comments from Professor Yutaka Matsuo:
TX’s business is one of the most challenging in the area of robotics and AI, and I honestly think that the success rate from an objective standpoint is 50-50. In other words, TX has brought this highest degree of difficulty into 50-50 possibility within three years of its founding. I think TX has a very high potential. I believe that if TX makes a breakthrough in the remote control robot business, it will not only improve investment value but also change the world. I would like to support TX’s challenges the best I can, mainly from the perspective of technology and talent acquisition.
Comments from Genki Sano, CTO of TX
Professor Matsuo is one of the few researchers who deeply thinks about how the Japanese technology industry should grow in order to make a global leap in the field of artificial intelligence from a long-term perspective. In particular, I find it very encouraging that he finds the potential for Japan to lead the world in the field of robot automation using machine learning. I believe that the simulations that refine machine learning as a learning environment and the reinforcement learning approach that uses it, advocated by Professor Matsuo, will definitely be necessary in the future robot industry. I am confident that the appointment of Professor Matsuo as the Advisor will help TX robots to shift from the current remote control to automatic control such as imitation learning by using remote control data.
